Stefan Dukic, dr.
Introduction
I am a postdoctoral research fellow and EEG project leader. My background is in biomedical/neural engineering, which I use to investigate EEG impairments in ALS disease using advanced signal analysis techniques. My research aims to identify and internationally validate biomarkers that can track disease progression and signal the onset of ALS, by using longitudinal data from patients and their asymptomatic family members. To this end, I employ EEG paradigms that capture motor and cognitive functions, as well as resting-state recordings. I also actively foster collaborations between EEG research and other research lines to better understand ALS from the complementary angles they offer. My long-term goal is to establish more precise clinical tools for early disease detection and monitoring.
Academic background
- Bachelor: BSc Electrical and computer engineering – University of Novi Sad (Serbia) – 2014
- Master study: MSc Biomedical engineering (Neural engineering) – University of Groningen (The Netherlands) and Trinity College Dublin (Ireland) – 2016
- PhD project: ‘Mapping electroencephalographic changes in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis’ – Prof. Leonard H. van den Berg and Prof. Orla Hardiman – Utrecht University (The Netherlands) – 28 November 2023
Awards/grants
I have received the personal ALS Talent Fellowship (2022-2025) and a project grant (2022-2025) from Stichting ALS Nederland to work on EEG biomarkers in ALS and asymptomatic C9orf72 repeat expansion carriers. Additionally, I was awarded the ALS Canada Acceleration Grant (2022-2025) to investigate the relationship between EEG and MRI in ALS and C9orf72 repeat expansion. I am a co-applicant on grants with Trinity College Dublin (ALS Centre Dublin) from The Galen and Hilary Weston Foundation (2025-2028) and The ALS Association (2023-2026), which focus on validating our previous EEG findings.
